A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
