Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
